Haifa is one of Israel’s few “mixed” cities in which different religions and ethnicities live together in harmony. On this tour we will visit the neighborhoods and holy sites important to Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Druze and Baha’I faiths. We will learn how Haifa has become a model city for tolerance and multicultural understanding.
The tour will start on Mount Carmel at the Baha’i Gardens. The gardens which overlook the entire city, not only provide a spectacular view of Haifa, but also serve as an outdoor oasis with colorful trees and flowers everywhere. Next to the garden is the Shrine of the Bab. The shrine serves as the resting place for the Bab; the man considered to be the forerunner of the Baha’i faith. Also close by is the Universal House of Justice, the governing body for Baha’i’s worldwide.
Next we will visit the neighborhood of Wadi Nisnas, a Christian area with a population of about 8,000 people. We will continue onto an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood and learn about their customs, religious identity and lifestyle.
After a break for lunch, we will regroup and go to the Kababir neighborhood, a place where Jews and Muslims live. Here we will visit the mosque and community center belonging to the Ahmadiyya Islamic branch.
Our last stop will be in the Druze Village of Isfiya. Here we will learn about this secret religion and ethnic group, some of their fundamental beliefs and their role in Israeli society.
