There is nothing like stepping out of bed and walk in to the wild!
This family tour does just that, wherever you have spent the night in Mitzpe Ramon, a short walk will take you to the edge of this huge crater, Makhtesh Ramon. There is no doubt that you will get a warm welcome by our local herd of Nubian ibexes.
Standing on this mighty, 40 kilometers long crest, is a great start, but as you start descending an ancient trail, carved 4,000 years ago in this 400-meter high rock wall to the bottom of the crater, you realize, through your feet, the magnitude of the desert.
The young limestone cliffs, rich with fossils; turn to ancient sandstone hills and colourful rock formations, inlaid with geothermal activity remnants of crystallized volcanic rocks.
The Ramon Crater Short Hike tour starts by walking straight from your hotel to the crater’s crest and
climbing “Har Gamal”, a small hill resembling a sitting camel, overlooking the crater and the town. Another short walk to the west will bring to the head of a descending ibex trail leading to the bottom of the crater.
Walking in Ramon dry brook will lead us to a huge Acacia tree where we can have a picnic or some rest before we will start ascending back to Mitzpe Ramon through another ancient camel path.
